True False Not Given Type of Questions Guided Reading Practice

how you prepare for isles I’m back with another type of question in the guided reading practice series.Today we’ll be discussing true false not given which is one of the most dreaded questions by a lot of students. So today I try to make it as simplified as possible so that you get to crack this particular type of question when you see the next time in your test.

So let’s get started with the strategies or the step by step approach that you should be following. So that you score well in this particular question type.

Read the heading of the passage. Of course, this is true for all type of questions for all your passages, the first and the foremost thing that you have to do is read the heading of the passage, so that you understand what can be expected in the following paragraphs of that particular passage. Number two, you have to read the instructions carefully.

This goes without saying that in case of all types of questions, be it your listening, reading, writing, or even in case of speaking, you should notice the instructions carefully you should read the instructions carefully in case of listening, reading, writing, and of course, in case of speaking, you have to listen to the instructions carefully so that you do not deviate or you do not go against what the instructions are asking you to do.

Step three is that you skim through the subheadings of the paragraphs to get an idea of what each paragraph is about. This is within the passage. So certain passages like the one that we are going to discuss today have certain sub headings for each of the paragraphs that are mentioned in that particular passage.

So if there are sub headings, utilize those sub headings, read those sub headings properly, so that you can figure out whether the answer is located in that particular paragraph or not. Step four is to underline the key words in the question and think about the synonyms.

This is more or less the same or the common point when you’re solving any type of question in all listening, as well as your reading test. Once you have thought of the synonyms, or once you have figured out the key word, what you have to do next is to locate these keywords and synonyms in the passage.

So that becomes your step five. Step six is to read those sentences properly to find the answer by comparing the question statement with the passage. Now this is specific to true false not given question. The rest of the instructions are more or less common with other types of questions as well.

But in this particular type of question, in case of true false not given you have to read those sentences properly to find the answer. And how do you do that by comparing the question statement, whatever question is asking you to do read that properly and compare it with what is already given in the passage.

Okay, once you compare, you will be able to understand the answer whether it’s true or false or not given just wait for another one minute, I’ll tell you how to compare and come to the conclusion or come to the answer.

Before that one very important thing this again, has been picked up from the official website of isles which is isles dot o RG so if you have any doubts with respect to this particular test, go to isles dot o RG and you will get all your answers.

Okay, any answer any confusion that you have with respect to the format, the test centers, location, data, anything and everything even some of the sample answers are given there. So go explore that particular website. The questions are in the same order as the information in the text.

That is the answer to the first question in this group will be located in the text before the answer to the second question, and so on and so forth. This basically means that if you figured out the answer to question number four, and also to question number six, then the answer to question number five will be in between the answers or four and six so you just have to read those lines in between the answer to question number four and Question number six so it makes your work easier it would help you out in locating the keywords or locating your answer easily. S

o keep this thing in mind that in case of true false not given questions, the instructions are given in the same order.Okay, now how do we compare So first of all, locate the information in the passage and then compare if the question statement matches the information in the passage.

If it exactly matches what the question is saying, then the answer is true. If the information and the passage contradicts whatever the question statement is, Then it becomes false your answer is false. However, if the question statement is not mentioned anywhere in the passage or half of the information is given or incomplete information is given in the passage, in that case your answer is not given.

So here please remember error 404.

So you did not find that particular information in the passage, even if you found certain information related to the question statement in the passage, it was half information, incomplete information or partial information. So, you can certainly say whether it’s true or false. So you would just say it’s not given nothing is mentioned about that particular thing. Now, one of the most important things that you have to keep in mind is the sentence that’s written here. Do not assume, presume or use your prior knowledge about the topic. Please do not do this. This is my humble request, a lot of students start assuming, guessing, presuming that your yoga Okay, this would be the answer or this could be the option. That’s not the case, do not use any of your prior information. All you have to do is follow what is written in the passage. Whatever has been mentioned in the passage on the basis of that information alone, you have to come up with the answer, whether it’s true false or not given, please do not use your own mind. Please do not use your assumptions or presumptions in coming to the answer. Or right here. It’s really, really important that you stick or you abide by what whatever information is given in the passage. Alright, so now that we are clear with the strategies, and with the step by step approach that needs to be followed, let’s quickly move on to the passage and start answering questions. The Step one is to read the heading of the passage, which is London to Brighton bike ride here. As soon as we read this particular heading, we can make out that it’s about a bike ride from London to Brighton, right. And apart from that whatever information you have to go through, you will be able to understand once you start reading. Now here in this particular passage, you see that each paragraph has a subheading as well, the start right carefully follow all instructions. We are a helmet attracting assistance in case of breakdown, refreshment stops, rain or shine, be prepared if you have to drop out. So I’ll just give you an example. If the question is about refreshment stops, then obviously you will read this paragraph the very first paragraph, your refreshment stops, you’re not have to read any other paragraph refreshment has been spoken about or mentioned about only in this paragraph. So that’s good to go. Do not waste your time and reading anything else. Let’s start with the questions. Now we’ll have to quickly go through the questions. And here we also have to underline the keywords. So the question here is obviously true, false not given. So you have to read the instructions carefully. That was our step three.

So do the following statements agree with the information given in the text?

So you have to tell whether it’s true or false or not given now, they’ve also told us what each one of these mean, if the statement statement here refers to nine till 16, this is called statement, okay. You show true basically means if the statement agrees with the information, so statement are these and information is the one that’s given to you in the passage that we just read right now.

Okay, scrolling through basically, if the statement contradicts the information, then it’s false. If there is no information, no information, partial information or something is not given to you completely. In that case, the answer is going to be not given.

All right, let’s quickly read three four at a time. You can also go through all the questions but I preferred reading four of them because that way I’ll be able to remember what the question was alright. So the first one is you should not arrive more than half an hour before your allocated stumping time. So you should not first of all look out for such words, the absolute words like not non

all, never everyone, no one these are absolute words. So keep in mind these words, because these can change the meaning of the entire sentence.

If I by chance miss out on the word note, I would read it as you should arrive more than half an hour before your allocated starting time which would not be right So you have to read your question carefully so that you don’t miss out on certain such key words.

So you should not arrive more than half an hour before. So again, before or after can also change the meaning of the question you’re located starting time. So something related to starting time, we have to locate that in the passage.

Second is your rider identity card will be sent to you before the event. So rider Identity Card sent to you before, again, it’s not during the event after the event. It’s before the event. So again, that’s one important keyword. So before the event, some roads may have normal traffic flow on them. So some roads, which means not all roads, so don’t mix it up with old roads.

For in case if it’s all roads, the answer might change. Some roads may have normal traffic flow on them, which basically means that the roads would be functional for other bicycles. helmets are compulsory for all participants. helmets, of course, it’s a key word it will help you this particular keyword will help you in locating the passage or the sentences in which you will find the answer are compulsory for all again, this is a very important key word all not some keep these things in mind.

Participants. Okay, so for now, we are just reading these four. Let’s go back to the passage and try to figure out the answer. So the very first one is you should not arrive more than half an hour before your allocated time. So let’s see when we should arrive.

Okay, the start. So we have easily figured out that the first question is about the starting time. So start as written here. This is the subheading, the bike starts from this to this. Okay, then you don’t have to read everything. Just try to locate when we should arrive.

I see 30 minutes somewhere. So let’s read that like, please arrive no earlier than 30 minutes before that time. Something grins Can you connect the question with the sentence, even if you want to read the sentences above, even if you want to read this part, you can read it, there’s no harm, but I could spot 30 minutes.

So I thought I’ll just read that part before reading anything else because it was talking about time. So they are saying that you should be arriving no earlier than not before. 30 minutes. So 30 minutes is the time you should arrive around. Okay. So if you want to read the sentences above, you can do that. I’ll quickly do it for you, though it’s not required.

Your Start Time is indicated by the color of your body number in this pack. It is also printed on the address label of the envelope. Please arrive no earlier than 30 minutes before that time. Okay, let’s go back to the question. You should not arrive more than half an hour 30 minutes before your allocated starting time. So what’s the answer to this particular question?

What’s the answer to this one?

It’s obviously true. Okay, the answer would be true. Alright, the second question is your Ryder identity card. So we have to look for these this keyword will be sent to you before the event. So we’ll have to read the passage or the part of the passage which is talking about something that’s happening before the event, or that particular part that is talking about rider identity. So let’s have a look at it.

I don’t see anything related to Ryder identity card in these two bullet points. Nothing has been mentioned. As such you’re if you quickly skim through these lines, you will see that nothing has been mentioned related to Ryder identity card. So let’s move

ahead right carefully. We put together as many facilities as possible to help ensure that there’s a double free day. But we also rely on you to ride safely and with due consideration of other cyclists and road users so they’re basically trying to tell you or trying to request you to drive safely. Okay, that’s what the paragraph heading also says. And with due consideration also keep in mind that there are other cyclists and road users although many roads are closed to oncoming traffic. This is not always the case. It is not always the case, which means that certain roads might be open to traffic and you should be aware of the possibility that there could be bikers coming in the opposite direction.

Riding Remember, it is not a race. Okay?

So this is something that you have to keep in mind. And when you see that, you know certain roads are open, I guess that’s related to question number three or four. Let’s go back to that. So some roads may have normal traffic flow on them.

Some roads may have normal traffic, which means oncoming traffic. So isn’t this true? Let’s have a look here. So it says, Yeah, here, although many roads are close to oncoming traffic, this is not always the case. And you should be aware of the possibilities that there could be waiters coming. So the answer is true to this particular question.

There would be some roads, where if there would be workers coming in the opposite direction, so this becomes your answer to the question number three. Now you have spotted the answer to the question number three here. And the question number one here, right, this one.

Okay, I’ll also highlight that if you want me to. And this one, there could be vehicles coming in the opposite direction. And not always the case. So here in this case, if the question number one has the answer here, three is your which means the answer to question number two should be between these lines.

But there’s no mention of Ryder identity card or there’s no mention of what needs to be done before the event here when it comes to the ID card. Therefore, the answer to that particular question is not given error 404 I cannot find any information related to Ryder identity card so my answer is going to be not so here the answer would be not given.

Not given and this again would be true. Okay, next is helmets are compulsory for all participants. Let’s quickly sport the paragraph where they’re talking about helmets. Okay, so helmets, we are a helmet we have a clear cut paragraph which is talking about helmet.

So helmet every year. We are delighted to see more riders wearing protective helmets, but we would like to see we would like to see every cyclist on the ride wearing one so they would like to see they would prefer seeing them. More than half of the reported injuries in cycling accidents are to the head and the helmet gives the best protection when the head hits the ground. So keeping this particular part in mind, what do you think is the answer to the question I take you back to the question.

helmets are compulsory?

Is that paragraph talking about any compulsion on wearing helmets for all participants, as a coach bola Chara has anything like that being talked about or written in the passage? The next question is helmets are compulsory for all participants. So we have to locate a paragraph that is talking about helmets and then check them compare whether all participants have to

wear the helmet is it compulsory for them to wear helmets or not? So I’ll just take you back to the passage. This part we have gone through Yeah, here we have this paragraph which has the subheading of your helmet. So the answer would definitely be in this paragraph itself.

We all helmet. So every year we are delighted to see more riders wearing protective helmet but but we would like to see every cyclist on the ride during one we would like to see. Okay, that’s the preference they would like to see every cyclist on the ride during one. More than half of the reported injuries in cycling accidents are to the head and the helmet gives the best protection when the head hits the ground. So now keeping in mind what the in what is keeping in mind the information that is given in this paragraph.

What do you think would be the answer?

Is it matching? Is it true? Is it false or is it not given? So there in the question it says helmets are compulsory for all participants. Do you see that it’s compulsory here. See it would have been true in case in case this particular paragraph would have said that we want Every cyclist to ride we are in one.

Or it could have been bad it is compulsory for every cyclist to ride we are in one helmet. In that case your answer would have been true. The answer here is false because they’re they’re saying compulsory here nothing about compulsion or nothing about whether helmets are mandatory or not is mentioned okay.

So if that is not mentioned your they have not talked about it being compulsory, they are instance saying, we would like to see every cyclist we would like to see every cyclist on the ride we already won. This basically means that the answer will not be true, it would be false, because it’s not compulsory.

And the answer says that it’s compulsory for everyone to wear helmets. I hope that’s clear. Let’s read the other four statements as well. refreshments are free. So refreshments, there’s another paragraph which has a heading called refreshment.

So you just have to locate that paragraph and read it. So refreshments are free. Free is the key word it could be paid, it could be you know that you can pay as much as you want to pay as per your, you know, liking so that could be anything. So free to all again, a major key word here is refreshments are free to all participants during the right.

Again, this is important. It’s not before the right after the right it’s during the right. So refreshments are free to all participants during the right. Next question is if you need a rest, okay, now we have to locate a paragraph that’s talking about rest, you must get off the road, you must get off the road. So you must not continue staying on road get off the road basically means go outside.

So the 15th one is first aid staff. So now we have to locate a paragraph when they’re talking about first aid staff or cycle capes can provide cycle capes. So we have to tell whether cycle capes are being provided by first aid staff or not 16th is bike events will charge you for the return of your bike.

So bike events, bike events, we’ll have to figure out where this bike event has been written in the passage, which charge will charge or is free for the return of your bike. So look at the paragraph there and they’re talking about returning the bike.

And then you have to check you have to compare whether it is being charged or is it free of cost. And accordingly, you will mark it as true false or not given. So let’s go back to the passage, refreshments, get off the road first aid stuff and return your bike.

Okay, so refreshment stops is right here in front of you. This one I’m obviously not reading this passage now because I don’t see any point of it, though this paragraph has rider identity card, but it has nothing to do with the question that we discussed.

So the question is your rider identity card will be sent to you before the event. There’s no discussion about that. Here. They’re just talking about the fact that in case if there’s a breakdown, your rider identity card will help you in getting free mechanical assistance.

So this has nothing to do with question number two, any way questions?

The answer to question number two would have been within or I would say between these lines that I marked here. So it’s question number two, so it had to be somewhere here. Okay. refreshment stops, most are organized by voluntary clubs and their prizes give you real value for money, they are also raising money for their local communities and the produce Heart Foundation.

So please give them your support. So please give them your support in terms of financial support, right? So they’re raising money for their local communities and some foundation so the prizes are, prizes give you a real value for money, which basically means that refreshments are not free. Of course, they are organized by voluntary clubs, and you have to pay for that particular price.

So the answer to question number five would be your let’s go back. And Question number five all you understand your I mean, 13th question, okay, refreshments are free to all participants during the ride. Therefore the answer to this question would be false, right? It’s false, because with this paid x, so here we are done with this part. Okay, rain or shine.

So cycle capes, I see it in the second line of this particular paragraph cycle cape. So, let’s read this particular sentence, God waterproofs, like a psychic a percentage, our first aid staff can only supply can only only supply bedliners and by the time you get one, you may be very wet.

So, basically, this particular part tries to tell you or explains to you that the first aid staff will only be providing you supply bin liners and will not be providing you with psychic gifts. So, only is the key word here. So, the answer would be false they will not be providing you with psychic capes for state staff would not do that.

Okay, then bike events will charge you for the return of your bike, whether the return of your bike will be charged or not by the bike events is the question and you’re also left with 14 if you need rest, you must get off the bike. So let’s locate these as well.

Okay, if you have to drop out if you have to drop out, we will try to pick your bike for you on the day called by Gibbons. So this is your keyword your bike events. This this number no more than two weeks after the right to arrange collection.

Okay, so far, they’re not talking about whether it’s charged or not. Sorry, we cannot guarantee the service nor can we accept liabilities for any loss or damage to your bike bike events will hold your bike for three months after which it will be disposed off you will be charged you will be charged for all costs incurred in returning your cycle.

So any cost that is incurred or any cost any money that is spent in returning your cycle or your bike will be charged? Okay, you will have to pay for it. So the answer to this particular question, would it be true that you will have to pay for your own bike

if you want it to be returned to you?

Now this part has to be between the answer to the question number 14 should be between question, answer the question number 13 and 15. So let’s quickly locate that part and read those lines so that we can find the answer. So refreshments is here.

And the first date is here. So let’s just go through these sentences again, what if we find something related to dropping off or getting off the road? So I don’t see any mention of you know, getting off the road or you know, if you need rest, you must be off the road Nothing of that sort is mentioned.

So the answer here again would be not given. Nothing has been spoken about this particular part, the resting part. So that’s it now that we have covered all the questions related to true false not given let me just take you back to the strategy so that we can revise it a little and then see how we followed it.

So first of all, we read the heading of the passage, then we read the instructions carefully that was true false not given, we skim through the subheadings of the paragraphs to get an idea of what each paragraph was talking about.

Certain paragraph was talking about refreshment, some other paragraph is talking about your helmet or the starting time of the ride something of that sort. Then what we did was we went to the questions, we read a couple of questions maybe four at a time, we underline the key words in the question and thought about the synonyms what could be the synonyms, what can be the words that we can use to locate that particular sentence in the passage.

So then we located them in the passage, it was easier for us to do that in this particular passage, because all the paragraphs had a subheading, and we just had to read the subheading to understand which information can be found in which paragraph. Then after finding the paragraph, After locating the paragraph, we read those four or five sentences properly to find the answer.

And ultimately, we compared the question statement with the passage to figure out whether it’s true false or not given in case if the information in the passage matched the statement question. Exactly. It was true if it did not match, it was contradictory.

In that case, it was false. For example, in the question with says, with said, helmets are compulsory for all participants, that was false because the passage was saying that they would like to see more and more people wear helmets, right.

So it was contradictory not given as when nothing is mentioned. about that particular part anyway, like, what needs to be done when you need to take rest? Should you gap get off the road? Should you stay on road?

Nothing about that was mentioned. So the answer was not given. Nothing was mentioned in the passage error 404. Now, again, do not use your prior information about cycling or bike ride, probably you have taken part in some bike ride and

there it was compulsory for you to wear helmets, that was probably in your specific city organized by a specific biking organization that might not be the case everywhere, so don’t use your prior information or knowledge about any topic.

Instead, what you have to do is stick to whatever has been mentioned, or has been written in the passage if the passage says it’s not compulsory, it’s not compulsory. If the passage says it’s compulsory to wear helmets, then you have to use true as the answer.

Alright, so keep these things in mind. The last sentence that you see on your screen is very, very, very important. So do not forget this particular thing. Forget using your brain just locate the answer in the passage and follow whatever those sentences are saying. If you have any doubts, you can leave it in the comment section below.

And I’ll be reverting to them so that everything is clear in case if you want me to cover up anything else any more questions on to false or not given you can let me know.
